Celebrities such as Mariah Carey, Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, Christina Aguilera, Paris Hilton and even Justin Timberlake have been reported to be setting up a legal fund to help end Britney Spears conservatorship. It comes after a judge turned down Britney’s request to end her father’s conservatorship – giving her legal control over most of her financial and personal movements which she called “abusive” and assimilated to “sex trafficking” on July 1st. The court ruling stated that Britney Spears is “substantially unable to manage his or her financial resources or to resist fraud or undue influence. Britney Spears has enlisted the help of an army of A-list stars who are so desperate to free her from her conservatorship they want to set up a fighting fund, it has been claimed.
Explained: What is conservatorship and why is Britney Spears under one
A conservatorship is usually granted for individuals when they are considered to have a severely diminished mental capacity. The courts intervene in such cases and nominate someone, usually another person from the family, for deciding on financial matters and other major life choices.
According to California’s law, for a “person who is unable to provide properly for his or her personal needs for physical health, food, clothing, or shelter” or for someone “substantially unable to manage his or her own financial resources or resist fraud or undue influence,” a conservatorship, also known as guardianship in some other states.
Why is Britney spears under the one?
Spears’ conservatorship is split into two parts – one is for her estate and financial affairs; the other is for her as a person. Under this legal agreement, Spears has not controlled her finances since 2008.
Jamie Spears was initially in charge of both parts of the conservatorship but stepped down as his daughter’s personal conservator in 2019 because of health reasons. Jodi Montgomery, a care professional, replaced him on a temporary basis but Britney Spears has requested that this be made permanent.
“She feels the conservatorship has become an oppressive and controlling tool against her,” a court investigator wrote in a 2016 report. The conservatorship had “too much control,” Spears said, according to the account of the conversation. “Too, too much!”. In November 2020, a judge declined to remove Mr Spears but named financial firm the Bessemer Trust as a co-conservator of her estate instead. A month later, the judge extended Mr Spears’ conservatorship until September 2021.
Why was the conservatorship set up?
Following her divorce from Kevin Federline in 2007, concerns were raised about Spears’ mental welfare after several incidents. She notably shaved her head and hit a photographer’s car with an umbrella, according to multiple news reports. These along with her erratic behaviours following her divorce led her to lose custody of her two children.
She also once refused to surrender her sons in a stand-off that involved the police and in 2008 was admitted to a hospital twice for a temporary psychiatric assessment ruling, according to the BBC.
In the years under the conservatorship, Spears has not been short of work: she released three albums, held a successful Las Vegas residency, and made numerous television appearances, including a stint as a judge on the US X Factor.
The term #FreeBritney dates back to 2009, according to a New York Times report, from a fan site that disagreed with the conservatorship agreement. Many fans of the singer disagree with the conservatorship agreement since early days and the #FreeBritney campaign obtained a new vigour in 2019 when she visited a mental health care centre citing emotional distress. She had also abruptly cancelled a Las Vegas residency and said that her father’s illness was the reason for her distress. Many people of the #FreeBritney movement also usually protest and demonstrate outside court hearings, according to the BBC.
Alongside her fans, many celebrities also came out in support of the singer. Notably, her sister Jamie Lynn Spears on June 29, broke her silence regarding the issue and came out in support of Britney Spears.
Britney Spears reaction
For years, the singer herself never commented on the #FreeBritney or conservatorship battle directly. Some supporters believed she used social media to send secret messages. They pointed to instances where she appeared to have responded to comments asking her to do things like wear a yellow outfit in her next post if she needed help.
Spears’ request in early 2021 for a hearing to address the court directly about the conservatorship was one of her open reactions to the issue. “I want to end this conservatorship without being evaluated,” BBC quoted Spears as saying during her address. “This conservatorship is doing me way more harm than good. I deserve to have a life,” she said while talking remotely to the court.
While Jamie Spears’ lawyer said that he was “sorry to see his daughter suffering and in so much pain,” the judge said that Britney Spears’ lawyer could file a petition to end the guardianship, according to the BBC report.
Celebrities react on Britney Spears conservatorship calls to #FreeBritney are louder than ever.
Fellow stars are showing their support for Britney Spears after the pop star revealed the harrowing private details of her conservatorship in a court hearing on July 23.
The legal arrangement has kept the singer’s father, Jamie Spears, in control of her finances, professional life, and personal life for 13 years following her public breakdown in 2008. Speaking publicly about it for the first time, Spears called for an end to her conservatorship, which she described as “abusive,” and said that her dad, management, and anyone involved in it “should be in jail.”
Spears expressed her desire to freely see her friends, go for a car ride with her boyfriend, get married, and have more kids. She expressed that under the conservatorship, she did not have permission to remove her IUD, which especially shocked fans and listeners across the Internet.
“I deserve to have a life,” she told the judge. “I’ve worked my whole life. I deserve to have a two- to three-year break and just, you know, do what I want to do.”
As reactions to the hearing poured in online, singers and public figures sent their love and support to Spears, and applauded her courage to finally speak up.
Mariah Carey tweeted, “We love you Britney!!! Stay strong.”
Halsey wrote, “Bless Britney and I hope with my whole heart she is awarded freedom from this abusive system. She deserves it more than anything. I admire her courage speaking up for herself today.”
Brandy posted, “Sending all my love and support to Britney Spears and her fans.”
Liz Phair wrote, “Oldest trick in the playbook of the patriarchy: declare a woman mad and gain control of her assets/property. Been happening for centuries.” She also called out a double standard between men and women in the public eye, writing, “Please show me The equivalent conservatorships for male entertainers/athletes exhibiting erratic behaviour.”
Calling for Britney to have bodily autonomy, Rose McGowan wrote, “Britney Spears has every right to be angry. How would you feel if your life was stolen, dissected, mocked? I pray she gets to live your life on her terms. STOP CONTROLLING WOMEN.”
Spears’s ex-boyfriend and fellow pop star Justin Timberlake also chimed in. he said “After what we saw today, we should all be supporting Britney at this time,” he shared. “Regardless of our past, good and bad, and no matter how long ago it was… what’s happening to her is just not right.”
Being in a modern society the women are still controlled by the community. Declaring the women norms and judging their way of being is always being in playbook of society. Women should have freedom and liberty to do whatever they want to do and feel good about themselves. They have the right on their life as well as their own properties they earn. They should be treated with respect and this society owe them that respect!
